I hope that everyone had a restful half term break! It has been a lovely first week back at school with lots of learning.
In Maths this week, our focus in Year 1 has been on using the equality and inequality symbols (< > =) to compare amounts of objects, as well as numbers. We then moved onto identifying a "whole." We talked about how we know if something is the whole because we have all of it. We then looked at splitting something into parts and discussing what we could see. In Year 2, we have finished our unit of work looking at finding the difference between amounts. We were introduced to a pictogram and bar chart. These were a fantastic way to find the difference between numbers.
In English, we have started to explore different Tinga Tinga tales. We have begun by reading "Why elephant has a trunk." We have focused on using adjectives to describe the elephant, then building this by writing simple sentences with an adjective in. Finally, we used the conjunctions "and" and "because" to extend our sentences, always remembering our capital letters and full stops!
Our Phonics sounds this week have been ar, or and ur. We thought of so many fantastic words with these sounds in and wrote them down using our segmenting anf blending skills.
In Science, we explored our animal groups again and looked at skeletons. We started by playing a game where we had to guess which skeleton belonged to which animal! After that, we compared these skeletons with a human one. We then started to identify how many legs the different animals had. We recognised that most animals with two legs were birds. Most animals with four legs were mammals!
In Topic, we compared the life of a child living in rural Kenya to our lives in rural Clive! There were many similiarities and differences and it was interesting to explore what life is like out there by watching a video and looking at different photos.
In P.E, we have started our new unit of work on Tuesday looking at ball skills. We began this week by playing different games involving travelling through "gates." We travelled without our balls at first and then introduced these, focusing on control and dribbling carefully. On Thursday we went down to the Village Hall for Gymnastics!
In R.E, we looked at our new big question which is "Why is Christmas so important to Christians?" We read the Christmas story and then explored different paintings from aroudn the world of the birth of baby Jesus. We linked this learning to English, where we used adjectives to describe the paintings.
Have a fantastic weekend everyone!
