We have had a busy week in Red Squirrel class with lots of fantastic learning happening!

In English this week, we have been finding out information about African animals. We started the week thinking of questions that we'd like to find out and learned what a question mark is. Then, we used books from the library to answer these questions. Next week, we will be writing a fact file about an African animal of our choice, so our writing focus on Thursday was to write an introduction to our fact file. Year 1 wrote a simple sentence using capital letters and full stops accurately. Year 2 used conjunctions such as "and" or "because" to link ideas.

Our phonics sounds this week were wh, ve and dge. Next week they are cks, tch and nk.

Year 2s spelling pattern this week was "ck" word endings. Next week we will be looking at the soft "c" before e, y and l.

In Maths, Year 1 have continued looking at counting to and from 100. All of our maths in Year 1 for the first few weeks is practical. We have been singing number song, playing games like snakes and ladders, using our hundred squares and going on number hunts around the school! Next week we will continue with this learning, particularly focusing on 2-digit numbers and recognising how to say these. 

In Year 2, we have been counting in multiples of 10, adding and and subtracting these and identifying how many tens are in a number. We are beginning to look at counting beyond 100 and how to form numbers such as 101, 102 and so on as this can be tricky! Next week, we will continue with this and start to look more at the place value in a 2-digit number.

In Science this week, we continued exploring the different animal groups such as reptiles, mammals etc. We began the lesson with a sorting game to see if we could remember how we know if an animal is a mammal and so on. Then, we drew our own animals to fit in each group. Next week we are going to explore the terms carnivore, herbivore and omnivore. 

In RE, our big question is "What do Christians believe God is like?" We have learnt what a parable is and read the parable of the lost son to find out what God teaches us abou forgiveness. This week we thought of lots of words and phrases that we might use when we are asking for forgiveness.

In DT, we have been exploring the traditional Ghanaian "Kente cloth." We have looked at the different colours and patterns that are used and had a go at weaving using different coloured paper! Next week we are going to design our own Kente cloth that we will eventually make using fabrics.

In Topic, we began to explore the 7 world continents. First, we looked at the globe and then the atlases. Then we went outside and used the chalk to draw the continents. We then jumped from continent to continent and thought of actions to go with each. For example, when we landed on Africa, we pretended to be elephants! Next week we are going to start identifying the 5 world oceans and look at which ones surround Africa.

This half term in Computing we are going to look at programming and using the bee bots.

This half term in PSHE our topic is "Being me in my world." We are going to talk about what makes us special and how to make sure that our classroom is a safe and happy place to learn.
