Wow! We've made it to the end of a very busy week and we have achieved SO much!

In English this week, we wrote our amazing fact files about African animals! Year 1 wrote some fantastic simple sentences, remembering capital letters and full stops. Year 2 used a fact file template and wrote sentences with conjunctions to join clauses. We even drew pictures and labelled them!

Our phonics sounds this week were cks, tch and nk. Next week they are ai, ee and igh.

Year 2s spelling pattern this week was looking at the soft "c" before e, y and i. Next week we will be looking at the silent "k" and "g" before n.

In Maths, Year 1 have continued looking at counting to and from 100. All of our maths in Year 1 for the first few weeks is practical. We have been using the language "more than" and "less than" to compare sets of objects higher than 10. We have also used our subitising skills to recognise how we know the amount of objects there are. Next week we will look at finding one more and one less than a given number and counting forwards and backwards to and from 20.

In Year 2, we have been looking at the place value of 2-digit numbers. We had to recognise the tens and ones and we had a go at representing our own 2-digit numbers on a hundred square. We used the stem sentence "____ has ___ tens and ___ ones." We also began to recognise what numbers end in if they are one less than a multiple of 10 or one more.

Next week, we will finish this unit of work and begin to look at addition of 3 or more addends. 

In Science this week, we explored the terms carnivore, omnivore and herbivore and began to recognise different animals that belong in these groups. Year 1 sorted animals into a venn diagram and discussed what their diet is like. Year 2 completed their own venn diagram by drawing pictures in the correct hoops. Next week we are going to carry out an investigation to find out what colour of bird seed the birds prefer to eat!

In RE, our big question is "What do Christians believe God is like?" We have learnt what a parable is and this week we read a new parable all about "Jonah and the whale." We recognised that this parable also teaches us about forgiveness. Year 1 drew and labelled some pictures to retell the story and Year 2 wrote their own prayer that they thought Jonah might have said when he was inside the whales tummy. 

In DT, we have been exploring the traditional Ghanaian "Kente cloth." This week we designed our own Kente cloth that we will eventually create using a weaving method!

In Topic, we have already explored the 7 world continents and this week we started to look at the 5 world oceans. We used a globe to identify these and recognised that the Pacific ocean is the largest of all. Lots of us identified that the Arctic and Southern ocean would be the coldest because of where they are, but spotted that the Indian ocean would be warm because part of it is close to the equator. Next week we are going to be introduced to the word "climate" and draw our own map of the world as a class, which includes the equator line. We will also talk about how the earth is split into two hemispheres.

This half term in Computing we are going to look at programming and using the bee bots. This week we started to use the bee bots and gave them a simple algorithm to follow. Thank you to FOCs for raising the money to buy new beebots for us. We were VERY excited!

This half term in PSHE our topic is "Being me in my world." We are going to talk about what makes us special and how to make sure that our classroom is a safe and happy place to learn.
