We are at the end of week 5 and there has been lots of fantastic learning happening in Red Squirrel class!
In English this week, we read a lovely story called "Arlo the lion who couldn't sleep" by Catherine Raymer. We began the week writing a list of reasons why Arlo could not sleep. Year 1 wrote a list, Year 2 used commas to separate items in a list. We then wrote sentences about the story using vocabulary that we had learnt. Year 2 used different conjuctions to join ideas.
Our phonics sounds this week were ai, ee and igh. Next week they are oa and oo.
Year 2s spelling pattern this week was silent "k" and "g" before n. Next week we will be looking at the "wr" for "r" sound.
This weeks tricky words for year 1 were says and are. Next weeks tricky words are were and was.
This weeks tricky words for year 2 were mind and behind Next weeks tricky words are child and children.
In Maths, Year 1 have continued looking at counting to and from 100. All of our maths in Year 1 for the first few weeks is practical. We have been using the language "more than" and "less than" to compare sets of objects higher than 10. We have also used our subitising skills to recognise how we know the amount of objects there are. Next week we will look at finding one more and one less than a given number and counting forwards and backwards to and from 20.
In Year 2, we have been looking at the place value of 2-digit numbers. We had to recognise the tens and ones and we had a go at representing our own 2-digit numbers on a hundred square. We used the stem sentence "____ has ___ tens and ___ ones." We also began to recognise what numbers end in if they are one less than a multiple of 10 or one more.
Next week, we will finish this unit of work and begin to look at addition of 3 or more addends.
In Science this week, as part of our ongoing learning about seasons, we have been exploring the changes outside as we move from summer to autumn. We observed our "class" tree outside and talked about what we notice is happening. Then, we came back inside and drew a picture of our tree in the summer and in the autumn to show the changes. We also discussed the daylight hours changing as we move through the seasons.
In RE, our big question is "What do Christians believe God is like?" We have learnt what a parable is and this week we listened to some hymns that are all to do with giving thanks to God. We spoke about our different types of prayers again such as "Suzie Sorry" "and "Peter Praise." Next week we will complete our end of unit assessment to show off all of the fantastic things that we have remembered about this topic.
In DT, we have started to bring our Kente cloth designs to life! We have been weaving different coloued fabrics. Next week, we will start to add extra detail to our designs.
In Topic, we have already explored the 7 world continents and the 5 world oceans. We started by recapping on these and then we learned the word equator. We identified this on the globe and talked about how the equator splits the world into two parts, the northern and southern hemisphere. Then, we worked as a class to create our very own map of the world that included all of the things that we have learned so far in our topic. We spotted which African countries were close to the equator and talkd about what their climate would be like! Next week it is our trip to Chester Zoo!!!
This half term in Computing we are going to look at programming and using the bee bots. This week we continued to program our beebots to perform different instructions. We had a large alphabet mat and we programmed our beebots to travel to a specific letter.
This half term in PSHE our topic is "Being me in my world." This week we talked about rewards and consequences. We discussed what a consequence is and when we might have one.
Next week is our trip to Chester Zoo. We will meet at bottom of Whitley's drive at the beginning of the day with a view to leave at 9:00. We will be back at 3:20 for normal school pick up. Please pick up from the bottom of the drive again. Please ensure your child is wearing school uniform, but comfy shoes is fine! A packed lunch if it has not been ordered from school and a water bottle.
Have a fantastic weekend everybody!
