We have had another exciting and fun filled week in Red Squirrel class!
We did our very first piece of independent writing for our special "writing journals" this week. It was a recount of the story Jack and the Flum Flum tree. IN Year 1, we made sure to use our capital letters and full stops, as well as our phonics to spell out unknown words. Year 2 used some excellent expanded noun phrases and time conjunctions to order their writing.
In Maths, Year 1 have been looking at the teens numbers between 10 and 20. We did a lot of counting forwards and backwards, using concrete objects to support us. Year 2 started a new unit of work, looking at calculations within 20. We began by looking at adding 3 addends, spotting how to make the calculation easier to solve. We used some first, then, now stories to describe 3 addends. We learnt that addends are numbers that we combine to make a whole!
In RE, we chose a day from the creation story and drew a picture to represent it. I couldn't believe the attention and effort that the children put into these pictures, they were beautiful!
In Science, we linked our learning to maths by using a pictogram to collect data about something. We wanted to find out about the different eye colours in our class. This was a good way of understanding that although our senses are the same, there are other things about us that are different! We started by creating a tally chart and then used this information to make our pictogram.
In Computing, we continued to use sketchpad to create a story scene. We listened to the familiar story "Three little pigs" and had to choose a scene from the story to create on sketchpad. We used new tools, such as the paintbrush and pen.
In Art, the children began to create their own vehicle collage. We looked at the work of other artists such as Martin Haake for inspiration. We had buses, trains, planes and cars!
In PE, we went to the circus! We rotated around some different stations, with a focus on balancing. On Thursday, we again rotated around different stations, thinking about our health and fitness and our stamina when exercising.
Our phonics sounds this week were ee, ai and igh. We did lots of practising of these sounds, as well as our tricky words for the week.
We have a handwriting session every morning and Year 2 are working really hard at joining their letters!
Have a great weekend everybody!
Miss Anderson :)
